Reacting to the latest developments in relations with Iran, in particular the call of the Iranian Parliament to sentence protesters to death, Cornelia Ernst, Chairwoman of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with Iran, stated:

"As Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Iran, I strongly condemn the call of the Iranian Parliament for the death penalty for the imprisoned protesters. This would affect approximately 14.000 people imprisoned. This is unacceptable. I would also like to strongly disapprove the supply of drones by Iran to Russia in relation to Russia's war in Ukraine. Furthermore the Iranian foreign ministry has recently sanctioned some of my colleagues, Members of the European Parliament - this is unacceptable, violates our rights as Members of Parliament in fulfilling our mandate."

"This is why as Chair of the Iran Delegation I will work tirelessly to support civil society, and the protesters. The European Parliament and our delegation in particular have a crucial role to play in this and as Chair I intend to uphold my full support and solidarity with the protesters in Iran. Their voices shall be heard now and in the future. We will do everything to establish safe communication channels with the civil society in Iran - this I now needed than ever."

The European Parliament adopted by 666 votes to 5, with 16 abstentions, a resolution on the case of Ahmadreza Djalali in Iran.

The text adopted in plenary was tabled by the EPP, S&D, Renew, Greens/EFA, ECR and the Left groups.

Swedish-Iranian national Dr Ahmadreza Djalali, who specialises in emergency medicine and is a scholar at Belgium's Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Italy's Università del Piemonte Orientale, was arrested on 24 April 2016 by the Iranian security forces. He was sentenced to death on spurious espionage charges in October 2017 following a grossly unfair trial based on a confession extracted under torture.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the violent crackdown on the recent protests in Iran.

The text adopted in plenary was tabled as a joint resolution by the EPP, S&D, Renew, Greens/EFA and ECR groups.

Tens of thousands of people from all over Iran and representing all segments of society have exercised their fundamental right to freedom of assembly and expressed their economic grievances over the increase in fuel prices of at least 50 % in the largest scale unrest in 40 years.

Despite repeated international calls for restraint, the Iranian security forces used disproportionate means and force against protesters. According to civil society reports, Iranian security forces opened fire on unarmed protesters who did not pose any imminent risk, and allegedly shot to kill. [...]

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation of imprisoned EU-Iranian dual nationals in Iran.

The resolution was tabled by the EPP, S&D, ECR, ALDE, and Greens/EFA groups.

Members cited the cases of several EU-Iranian dual nationals detained in Iranian prisons.

They noted that the continuing practice of arrests of EU-Iranian dual citizens is followed by a pattern of prolonged solitary confinement and interrogations, lack of due process, denial of consular access or visits by the UN or humanitarian organisations, secretive trials in which the detainee is given limited access to counsel, long prison sentences based on vague or unspecified 'national security' and 'espionage' charges, and state-sponsored smear campaigns against the imprisoned individuals.

The European Parliament adopted by 415 votes to 124, with 74 abstentions, a resolution on nuclear security and non-proliferation.

The text adopted in plenary was tabled by the EPP, S&D, ALDE and Greens/EFA groups.

Members stressed that the global security environment, and particularly that of the EU, has deteriorated considerably, becoming more fluid, more precarious and less predictable. [...]

As of January 2016 nine states - the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) - possessed a total of approximately 15 395 nuclear weapons.

Parliament called on all nuclear-weapon states to take concrete interim measures to reduce the risk of nuclear-weapon detonations. [...]

Parliament welcomed the agreement between the P5+1 powers and Iran on the latter's nuclear ambitions. This Iran Nuclear Deal was a notable achievement for multilateral diplomacy, and for European diplomacy in particular.

The European Parliament adopted by 456 votes to 174, with 67 abstentions, a resolution on the EU strategy towards Iran after the nuclear agreement. [...]

Political dialogue: Parliament recalled that the Council's decision to lift all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran as a result of implementation of its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Trade and economic matters: Parliament welcomed the positive results already achieved by JCPOA, such as the 43 % increase in trade between Iran and the EU during the first six months of 2016.

Sectoral cooperation: Parliament stated that energy cooperation can play a significant role in diversifying the sources of energy supply to the EU, thereby contributing to the EU's energy security.

Regional security: Parliament stated that the nuclear deal opens the possibility for cooperation in resolving the region's security crisis and that Iran should play a stabilisation role in the region.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the EU strategy towards Iran.

Recalling that negotiations on a comprehensive trade and cooperation agreement and on a political dialogue agreement between the EU and Iran started in 2002 and that this process was interrupted in 2005 as a result of revelations concerning Iran's clandestine nuclear activities, Parliament welcomed the Geneva interim agreement between the E3/EU+3 and Iran on Iran's nuclear programme.

It stressed that there could be no alternative to a peaceful negotiated solution to address the international community's concerns and it welcomes the decisions taken by the Council at its meeting of 20 January 2014 with a view to implementing the Joint Plan of Action, in particular provisions on partial sanction relief. Parliament believed that, once a comprehensive agreement ensuring the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear programme was reached, nuclear-related sanctions against Iran should be gradually removed.
