Referring to numerous incidents since November 2022, where thousands of girls and women across Iran have been attacked with toxic chemicals to prevent them from attending education, MEPs condemn in the strongest terms this atrocious attempt to silence women and girls.

Urging authorities to ensure girls have non-discriminatory access to education, MEPs call on the Iranian regime to repeal any legislation that discriminates against girls and women.

They urge the UN Human Rights Council to task the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission with an independent investigation into the schoolgirl poisonings and for those responsible to be held accountable.
The resolution was adopted on 16 March 2023 by 516 votes in favour, 5 against and 14 abstentions.
[..]

European Parliament resolution of 16 March 2023 on Iran, in particular the poisoning of hundreds of schoolgirls (2023/2587(RSP))

Source : © European Union, 2023 - EP

General documents - Statement of 13 December 2022 on renewed execution of a protester in Iran - Delegation for relations with Iran

Cornelia Ernst, Chair of the European Delegation to Iran, stated on the occasion of the renewed execution of a protester in Iran:

"As Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with Iran, I strongly condemn the execution of Madshidresa Rahnaward. Rahnaward is the second person executed by the regime since the protests began. More are in serious danger to follow. Against this background, I remain very clear: The death penalty must not be part of the repertoire of state action - in Iran or in any country in the world.

That yet another young person has been executed by the Iranian regime leaves me deeply saddened. I therefore call for an immediate moratorium on all death sentences imposed by the Iranian regime and the release of all imprisoned protesters. The regime shall be assured that the European Parliament and democratic societies worldwide will not turn their gaze away from the courageous people in Iran. Every violation of human rights will be seen. More than ever, my message is that the European Parliament stands with the feminist revolution in Iran."

Further, Cornelia Ernst stated regarding the sanctioning of another European MP by the Iranian regime:

"I condemn the sanctioning of my valued colleague Hannah Neumann by the Iranian regime. This represents a diplomatic affront which we, for our part, are firmly countering: as long as European parliamentarians are sanctioned by the Iranian regime, inter-parliamentary dialogue must remain suspended. At the same time, I am deeply concerned that a further diplomatic escalation spiral will occur. Moreover, thoughtless sanctions cannot be the means of choice: The past has shown that sanctions must be targeted and tailored, otherwise they run the risk of also affecting broad parts of civil society - and consequently the protesters themselves. Future sanctions must therefore be subject to an assessment that ensures they do not harm Iranian civil society. What is needed now are smart instruments and targeted support for the movement. This can take the form of providing secure channels of communication, funding or medical assistance. In my function as Chair of the Delegation, I will do everything I can to intensify these efforts."

Cornelia Ernst

Strasbourg, 13 December 2022

Statement of D-IR Chair of 13 December 2022

Source : © European Union, 2022 - EP

Reacting to the latest developments in relations with Iran, in particular the call of the Iranian Parliament to sentence protesters to death, Cornelia Ernst, Chairwoman of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with Iran, stated:

"As Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Iran, I strongly condemn the call of the Iranian Parliament for the death penalty for the imprisoned protesters. This would affect approximately 14.000 people imprisoned. This is unacceptable. I would also like to strongly disapprove the supply of drones by Iran to Russia in relation to Russia's war in Ukraine. Furthermore the Iranian foreign ministry has recently sanctioned some of my colleagues, Members of the European Parliament - this is unacceptable, violates our rights as Members of Parliament in fulfilling our mandate."

"This is why as Chair of the Iran Delegation I will work tirelessly to support civil society, and the protesters. The European Parliament and our delegation in particular have a crucial role to play in this and as Chair I intend to uphold my full support and solidarity with the protesters in Iran. Their voices shall be heard now and in the future. We will do everything to establish safe communication channels with the civil society in Iran - this I now needed than ever."

Statement of 9 November 2022 on latest developments on relations with Iran
Erklärung vom 9. Parliament believed that, once a comprehensive agreement ensuring the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear programme was reached, nuclear-related sanctions against Iran should be gradually removed.

Resolution of 3 April 2014 (EN)

Source : © European Union, 2021 - EP

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the EU's approach towards Iran.

Parliament recalls that Iran is facing an array of governance challenges - from power struggles between competing factions within the country's ruling elites to a crippling social and economic malaise, a problematic regional security environment and rising popular discontent at home - many of which are products of the Iranian regime's own making.

Faced with these challenges, it stresses that an EU approach should be defined towards Iran. [...]

Parliament insists that in any future negotiations with Iran, the High Representative should make the situation of human rights in the country a top priority. It calls on the Commission to implement all the instruments at its disposal for the protection and promotion of human rights in Iran.
General documents - Resolution on the case of Nasrin Sotoudeh, 20 January 2011 - Delegation for relations with Iran

Following the debate which took place on the same day, the European Parliament adopted by 79 votes to 0, with 0 abstentions, a resolution on Iran, in particular the case of Nasrin Sotoudeh.

The resolution had been tabled by the EFD, ALDE, ECR, S&D, EPP, GUE/NGL Greens/ALE groups.

It calls on the Government of Iran immediately and unconditionally to release Nasrin Sotoudeh, a prominent Iranian human rights lawyer, and all other prisoners of conscience. It considers that Nasrin Sotoudeh's sentence is of a political nature, aimed at taking one of Iran's leading human rights defenders out of practice. Members call on Iran to adhere to the standards set forth by the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, which states that lawyers must be allowed to carry out their work without intimidation, hindrance, harassment or improper interference.

Resolution of 20 January 2011 (EN)

Source : © European Union, 2021 - EP

General documents - Statement of 28 September 2020 on the situation of Nasrin Sotoudeh - Delegation for relations with Iran

The continuous detention and deteriorating health of the human rights defender Nasrin Sotoudeh is causing great concern for the chair of the EU's Parliament's Iran delegation.

Sotoudeh, a winner of the 2012 Sakharov Prize, is currently serving 38 years in jail for defending political prisoners back in 2018. But amidst the ongoing pandemic and the dangerous conditions faced by fellow political prisoners in Iranian jails, Soutoudeh began her hunger strike in Tehran's Evin prison back in August in protest at the risks exposed to her colleagues.

However, Soutoudeh was taken to hospital two weeks ago due to health problems. Yet, she was returned to Evin prison just days later, before finally ending her hunger strike last Friday.

Cornelia Ernst, chair of the EU Parliament's Iran delegation, has expressed her utmost concern at Sotoudeh's condition, and has called on the Iranian authorities to immediately accept Soutoudeh's request to recuperate at home ahead of a heart procedure, and that she should be allowed to freely choose her own medical treatment:

"I strongly support Nasrin Sotoudeh's call for the Iranian authorities to grant temporary release to human rights defenders, lawyers, dual and foreign nationals, prisoners of conscience, political prisoners, and all other individuals who had been detained without sufficient legal basis during the Covid-19 pandemic."

"Sotoudeh, a Sakharov Prize laureate in 2012, is one of many Iranian human rights lawyers who are currently imprisoned for defending fundamental freedoms. Her conviction and sentence, as well as those of all other human rights defenders detained in Iran, should immediately be revisited and her case reviewed in line with international fair trial requirements," she concluded.

Statement of D-IR Chair of 28 September 2020 (EN)
Statement of D-IR Chair of 28 September 2020 (FA)

Source : © European Union, 2020 - EP

General documents - Statement of 15 September 2020 on the execution of the Iranian wrestler Navid Afkari - Delegation for relations with Iran

Regarding the execution of the Iranian wrestler Navid Afkari, Cornelia Ernst, chairwoman of the European Parliament's parliamentary delegation for relations with Iran, stated:

"I condemn the recent execution of the young athlete Navid Afkari. His murder is part of a series of death sentences imposed in connection with protests in 2018 and 2019. Given the alarming frequency of the death penalty against demonstrators, I am very concerned about future reactions by the Iranian authorities to protests or any expressions of dissenting views. As the Iranian delegation, we will therefore organize a hearing on the human rights situation in Iran and also discuss the case of Navid Afkari. "

"I call on the Iranian government to end the persecution of peaceful demonstrators and to guarantee the democratic rights and freedoms of the Iranian people. The European Parliament is invariably against the death penalty, in all circumstances and in all cases. It is a cruel and inhuman punishment that represents an unacceptable rejection of human dignity and integrity.
