Parliament will award the 2023 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the brave People of Ukraine for their fight for freedom and democracy. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address MEPs via video link and members of Ukraine’s State Emergency Services, civil society as well as elected leaders will receive the award at the ceremony in Strasbourg in the name of the People of Ukraine. MEPs will vote on proposals to speed up issuing renewable energy project permits and reducing the energy consumption of buildings. Both steps will help the green transition and boost energy independence. Parliament is also expected to call for more robust rules to support people with disabilities. Citizens who were at the core of the Conference on the Future of Europe's work came to Brussels to check how the EU institutions are following up on their recommendations for change. A unique exercise in participatory democracy, the Conference wrapped up in May 2022, delivering dozens of proposals to make sure Europe can deal with upcoming challenges. The Parliament, the Council and the Commission had promised since the beginning to follow up on its final proposals, whatever those may be. On 2 December, representatives from the three institutions took questions from citizens at a feedback event in the European Parliament in Brussels.

The European Parliament awarded the 2022 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the brave people of Ukraine, represented by President Zelenskyy, Ukrainian elected leaders and civil society. Since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, millions of people have been displaced, tens of thousands killed or injured. Yet despite the brutality of the occupying forces and the unimaginable human suffering, the people of Ukraine have refused to bow. By awarding them with the Sakharov Prize, the European Parliament reiterates its solidarity with the people of Ukraine in their fight for freedom and independence.

By 2035, all new cars manufactured for the EU market should produce zero-emissions. This is what Parliament is aiming for with new rules on CO2 emission standards for cars and vans as part of the Fit for 55 package. Older cars (including diesel cars) will be allowed to continue running until the end of their lifetime, but investing in future vehicles starts now. MEPs want car manufacturers to start developing affordable electric cars and vans now, in order to meet market demand by 2035 and reach the EU’s 2050 climate objectives.

MEPs have demanded restraint from Iranian authorities over protests triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini. Dozens of people are reported to have been killed in the demonstrations, which have sparked expressions of solidarity around the world. Amini, a 22 year-old Kurdish woman, died on 16 September after her arrest by morality police in Tehran. They claimed she had broken headscarf rules. The EU has called on Iran to respect fundamental rights. It is considering further restrictive measures against Iranian authorities.
