On 28 June, the CONT and CULT Committees together will hear the European Court of Auditors’ assessment of EU expenditure on the digitalisation of schools to learn how this can best benefit students’ learning. Funding comes for Cohesion Policy Funds, REACT-EU and the RRF to contribute towards the achievement of the EU’s digital education action plan.

Highlights - Exchange of views with representatives of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine - Committee on Culture and Education

On 28 June, the Committee on Culture and Education will will discuss education, media, cultural heritage and youth policies in an exchange of views with Members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

Two committee chairs, Mr Mykyta Poturaiev - Chairman of the Humanitarian and Information Policy Committee and Mr Serhii Babak - Chairman of the Committee on Education, Science and Innovation and five MPs will discuss on the devastating consequences of the ongoing war of aggression on the Ukrainian people. This would also be the occasion to assess the immediate needs in the sectors concerned and to pave the way for a further cooperation, in particularly with regard to bringing Ukraine closer to the EU considering the country's EU candidate status.

On 10 June, the Committee on Culture and Education has been at the forefront of the European Youth Event (EYE) 2023 in Strasbourg, involving young people in the session called "Engaged4YOUth - MEPs want to hear from you".

The CULT Committee Chair, Sabine Verheyen, together with CULT Members Joao Albuquerque, Marcos Ros Sempere and Milan Zver, engaged in conversation with over 100 young people to discuss key priority issues: education, unpaid and underpaid traineeships, mental health, demographics and voting age, Erasmus+, volunteering, and how MEPs can continue to bridge the gap between young people and policy makers, in order to bring youth policy concerns closer to EU decision making.

Emerging alongside the rapid development of the internet and digital technologies that have particularly thrived over the past two decades, music streaming (and streaming in general) is a technology that offers unlimited access to a selected catalogue of audiovisual content via an online platform. The year 2006 is often seen as the starting date for music streaming, with the launch of the Swedish streaming platform Spotify, the current market leader. The technology, however, had already been developed long before and in reality does not result from ‘one innovation but a collection of many’ (Fagerjord, 2019). Since its origins, the legal streaming market has been transformed profoundly, especially in terms of its economics, generating satisfaction, concerns and criticism (Hesmondhalgh, 2022). Indeed, the overall ‘systemic changes’ from which streaming derives and to which it responds are not yet fully understood and have not been addressed beyond the common individual user-centred approach (Camilleri et al., 2020; Jansson, 2021). This is particularly important as streaming currently represents the bulk of music sales and is the second largest source of revenue for the music industry (Legrand Network, 2022; Lozic et al., 2022).
